Infrastructure (Lab and Library Details)

The Civil Department library has an excellent library facility for students, faculties, and researchers. Our library is nearly 20 years old and contains all the latest books, journals, etc., the Library is located on the Ground floor of the main block and covers an area of 400 sq. ft.
Details of Library Holdings:

  • Books – 650
  • Conference Proceedings – 75
  • National Journals – 10
  • U.G Projects – 500
  • P.G Projects – 400
  • Ph.D. Thesis – 4

A well-equipped computer lab with advanced facilities is established for the benefit of civil engineering students. This lab consists of high-end terminals supported by the latest Hardware, Software, visual aids etc. Advanced Civil Engineering Softwares are procured for making the students globally competitive and industry-ready. Students get professional training on 2D & 3D drafting, modeling of Civil Engineering drawings. Students will also gain the knowledge of design and drafting required for Civil Engineering.

The objective of the geotechnical lab is to check the basic properties of soil of a certain area that is to be used for construction purposes. Soil properties include Atterbergs limits, bearing capacity, liquid limit, plastic limit, moisture content, etc. The lab is equipped with major equipments like CBR Apparatus, Standard Penetration Test(SPT), Direct Shear apparatus, Triaxial test apparatus, Unconfined Compression testing machine, Standard Proctor test apparatus, Permeability test apparatus, Swell Test Apparatus etc.

The Surveying Lab consists of an assortment of state-of-the-art equipment for performing various engineering measurements. This lab has total stations, Dumpy Level, Theodolite, Tacheometer and mapping grade GPS unit for obtaining angle and distance measurements. Ancillary equipment such as tripods, reflective prisms, and level rods are also available. Students are given special training on effective application of total station in the field, by which they will be familiar with the latest field practices of accurate surveying.

The Structural Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering at SKCT is one of the best structural engineering laboratories in Coimbatore. The laboratory serves a varied range of activities covering those related to teaching, research, development and consultancy. The main activities include experimental studies on model/prototype of structural elements and assemblies under various static and dynamic loading conditions. The Structural Engineering Laboratory also offers technical services for testing and research on the structural behavior and properties of materials.

The main objective of the strength of the materials laboratory is to demonstrate the basic principles in the area of strength, mechanics of materials and structural analysis to the undergraduate and postgraduate students through a series of experiments. Measuring the properties of the materials such as Impact strength, Tensile strength, Compressive strength, Hardness, Toughness, Ductility are conducted in the laboratory. Faculties and students utilize this facility for their research work and competitions at the national level.

Environmental Engineering Laboratory is sound equipped to meet the academic requirements of Under Graduate Programs with advanced testing equipments. Modern equipments are added periodically keeping abreast of the latest technological advancements which in turn helps us to render assistant to the students in carrying out innovative projects. BOD incubator, COD Digestor, Multiparameter Spectrophotometer, Digital Dissolved Oxygen meter, Digital Multiparameter, Turbiditimeter, Jar test apparatus etc. are the major highlights of the laboratory. The lab is fully equipped to check various impurities present in water in the form of dissolved components and solvents in the form of salts, chemicals as well as alkalies or alkalinities. The lab has the potential for carrying out research and consultancy work for various projects related to the environment.

The objective of this laboratory is to determine the various parameters related to fluid flow in pipes, open channels and hydraulic machineries. At present, it is equipped with various stand-alone equipment to carry out experiments like determination of metacentric height of a floating vessel, verification of the Bernoulli’s energy equation, study of transition from laminar to turbulent flow, determination of velocity profile for pipeline flow, determination of coefficient of discharge for obstruction flow meter(venturi meter/orifice meter), determination of discharge coefficient for various notches, determination of hydraulic coefficients for flow through an orifice, determination of friction coefficient for pipes of various diameters and calculation of minor head losses in pipes. The laboratory also houses facilities for carrying out the study on characteristics of various machinery such as pumps (Centrifugal, Submersible, Reciprocating, Jet pump) and Turbines (Pelton Wheel, Francis, Kaplan and Turgo impulse turbine).
